Meet Our Candidates:

The Seattle Districts of the Republican Party are lucky to have some exceptional candidates in the various State Senate and Legislative races. Running candidates in every race is not only gives our fellow citizens a choice, but is also the best way for us to reach fellow Republicans in Seattle.

We are lucky this year to have a healthy mix of enthusiastic young people with fresh ideas, and experienced long-time party members with a wealth of real-world experience.

This is a great chance to get a look at some of the new faces our party will be putting forward. All of our candidates welcome your support and involvement. There are numerous opportunities to make phone calls, ring doorbells, appear at events, and... of course, write checks to help get our message out.

As we get closer to the filing deadline, more faces will appear here.

Will Sohn

Hi, I’m Will Sohn, and I am running for State Representative, Position 2. I will be entering my junior year of college at the University of Washington in the fall, pursuing a degree in political science. Many of you probably think I’m a little young to be running for the state legislature, but I believe that I am at just the right age. The decisions being made in Olympia regarding our taxes, our businesses and our roads will affect me for the rest of my life. Students in the public school system like myself have felt the impact of the state’s policies on education more than anyone else. I hope to be elected to the state legislature so that I can bring well-needed changes to the state that will strengthen our economy, our infrastructure, and our public services.

Seattle voters should not be forced to send the same persons back to Olympia every two years. As the Republican candidate, I want Seattle voters to know that there is another choice: the choice for business owners to run their businesses how they see fit; the choice for students to spend their time in school learning real skills rather than studying for invalid tests like the WASL; the choice for voters to vote for who they think is most qualified and have that vote actually count.

If you want to help out my campaign in any way, I thank you for the offer and encourage you to attend one of the 43rd District GOP meetings this summer. They will be taking place at Gasworks Park on the third Tuesday of June, July and August. There are also many other events here in Seattle for Republicans. You are not alone! Don't be afraid to make your voice heard. Together we all can make a comeback and restore this state to its former glory days when sound statesmen like Dan Evans and Slade Gorton brought common sense to our government.

Together we have a choice!

Hugh Foskett:

Hi, I’m Hugh Foskett, and I am running for State Representative, Position 1. I graduated from The Bear Creek School in Redmond, and am now a second year student at the University of Washington, majoring in Mathematics with a concentration for teacher preparation. After graduating, I plan to teach math on the high school level.

I was raised in a very conservative home in Bellevue, and am a firm believer in conservative ideals. My main concerns for this election are education reform and environmental responsibility.

Education: Wanting to be a teacher, I am very concerned with our educational system. One chief concern is the Integrated Math books that are currently being used in our high schools. These books are very poorly written and were thrown out of the California public school system several years ago after they made the mistake of using them. The WASL is another thing that needs to be removed from our schools as it’s purpose can be fulfilled much more efficiently by other testing systems.

Environment: We live in one of the most beautiful places in this nation. We must demonstrate responsible stewardship of this fine area. We need to encourage environmentally safe construction in order to guarantee our future generations the beauty that we have been fortunate enough to experience.

I welcome your support for my campaign!

CANDIDATE'S STATEMENT:

I offer voters in the 43rd District a choice, which they have not had for many years. I am an ordained minister and a Republican, and both my faith and my philosophy are all about choices and their consequence. Every family in America makes choices daily, and smart parents raise their children to make good ones. And in good families, parents do not look to derive personal benefits for themselves as a result of their role as decision makers.

I think that government at its best is like a tight-knit family. Part of making good choices is asking questions and finding the answers. What are our choices? What is the real cost of each? What is the best choice for our family?

Washington government makes choices every day. If I felt that decisions in Olympia were being made on a daily basis that were as sound as those made around the kitchen tables of the average family in our state, I would not be running.

Let's be honest: you make better choices at home than your State government makes on your behalf. And too many of the people involved in making those decisions are thinking only of themselves and their cronies, and not about you, your family, or our community.

I promise to ask the hard questions, make the best choices, act for you and not for myself, and help make sure that your tax dollars are spent on the things that help your family and our community.

candidate for Washington State Senate, 43rd District
